Swimming upstream
That is what I will call this blog and that is how I sometimes feel. I write about things that are important to me and also things that amuse me. Sometimes they are the same thing. Some of the posts are older and re-edited and some are left as written, whether they were written last week or ten years ago. If they are here, I still find something important in them.
Please feel free to comment or disagree, as I never ask for agreement, but do hope for some consideration

Problem solving pyramid

A child falls and scrapes his knee. (OMG! he used a gender specific pronoun again). One of the first things the child will do, after he realizes that he is hurt and starts to cry, is to look for help, most likely in the form of his mother. There is a lesson here. If mommy isn’t there at the time, who would he go to for help? Perhaps his father or an older sibling. But, if they are not around either, then it may be a baby sitter, or teacher or close friend, and if that isn’t an option then maybe there is a neighbor or local Police officer willing to help.
There is a philosophical problem-solving hierarchy at work here; one that is natural and practical. Clearly the child wouldn’t call child services, or his state representative or congressman; Why? Because even a baby understands that problems are best solved and solved best, close to home. No one can understand the needs or the special circumstances that are germane to an individual or group, better than those who have an intimate relationship with them.
So why do so many of us put our trust in bureaucracies and departments that have long ago abandoned any concern for the individuals they are lording over.
In my view, any attempt to solve complicated problems by a central power authority is an exercise in futility and stupidity. I would hope that one may consider this philosophical premise when politicians are pretending that they are going to “solve” problems such as health care, energy, education, student loan debt, jobs, et cetera by creating or adding another department or layer of bureaucracy. (I intentionally left out Anthropogenic Global Warming as it is really an agenda in search of a problem) Have any of the above challenges actually been improved by any of these departments? I think not. Individual liberty and invention are the best ways to solve almost any problem. Even the programs with moderate success have been ruined by seemingly well-intentioned politicians. The larger the bureaucracy and the more centralized the power, the less likely are those problems to be “solved” and the more likely they are to be miss-used, abused and corrupted by those with the power to do so. Moreover, there is an inverse relationship, as we will have less freedom and less options when it comes to dealing with our own problems and issues in life. The pyramid of tyranny is exactly opposite the pyramid of liberty. The tyrant sits atop of a mountain of underlings who are told what they must do, what words they cannot use, what projects will be funded and what strings are attached to them. Is there anyone who thinks that this is a good idea? Unfortunately, there are. In this election there are to opposing philosophies at odds with each other. Forget about the people on the top of the ticket, they are just a symptom of the reaction to the problem. One philosophy holds that the individual is sovereign and the state should be held to the minimal power to do it’s constitutionally required jobs with the maximum amount of freedom and liberty to the citizen. The other philosophy is that of the administrative state. Distrust of the individual, class and race envy, and eat the rich are the primary indicators of this mentality. Also, the philosophies are not directly related to party. Never Trumper’s are securely ensconced in the administrative state; they fear their influence will be undermined by a president like Trump. It is estimated that about 20 percent of the people at Trump rallies are democrats and people who have never voted. I believe that they understand the philosophy differences and have chosen to side with the president despite his patent flaws. I would hope that some of the more reasonable democrat friends would consider that this election is not about two men but the difference between liberty and a gradual decline into chaos and mob rule. In my view the “biggest threat to our democracy” is in those who think we have one. What we have, should we be able to keep it, is a republic. Remember that democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

Adventures during Pandemic
Jan, Feb. March 2020 We were told there was nothing to fear. One of my clients regularly travels to China, He never got sick and we continue to see each other often. We were living our lives normally until the narrative shifted. Then we were told to lock down. Two weeks to stop the spread they said. Then the goal posts kept moving. I went through my pictures and notes for the past year two years and found:
Number of days I stayed home or missed work; zero.  Number of holiday get togethers cancelled; one, the first Easter. Number of Hash runs cancelled; zero. Number of times the grandkids visited; too many to count. Number of times I used hand sanitizer; once, when the dentist put it in my hand. Number of states entered; 16. Number of times I called the phone number to let them know of my travels; zero. Number of times I stayed out of the parks when our governor closed them; zero. Number of times I wore a face diaper without being forced to; zero. Number of times I got the vaccine; zero. Number of times I stood on those stupid floor spots; zero. (See a pattern here?) Activities during the pandemic with other people or groups; in order of sequence, Skiing, hashing, beach club weekly during the summer, Biking and Mountain biking, Inn to Inn tour in Vermont eating indoors and staying at Band B’s, meeting with clients, (some were reluctant at first but later agreed to meet, without incident), Sailing from Newport to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Mountain Biking at Stewart in NY, Boating on Lake Wallenpaupack, Sailing to Annapolis, New Hampshire mountain biking, Texas visit with my son and his family, Powerboat and biking at Martha’s Vineyard, Horseback riding, Cross country skiing, Christmas party with friends, mountain biking, Texas again, Marco Island, St. Thomas and St John sailing adventure, back to Texas, Wyndham skiing, more cross country with friends, back to Texas again, Fort Meyers vacation, Mountain biking in New Hampshire with friends, back to Marco Island for a mural project staying at hotels along the way. Home for the summer, going to the beach club on weekends and meeting many friends, more mountain biking, hiking, parties and get togethers.
I do understand that those who were elderly, sick, obese, diabetic or suffering from other health problems were wise to take precautions and we mourn those who have been lost to the virus, but for well over 90 percent of us the risk was minimal compared to other diseases, and, certainly not bad enough to impose the drastic measures that were imposed on us.
And now that two years or so has passed, some of us are slowly waking up to the fact that the so-called miss-information spreaders, who were censored by our government with the help of the journalists and tech companies are proving to have been right. It may take some time for all of the adverse effects of the shot to be discovered, (blood clots, sudden adult death syndrome, nervous system failures and seizures, Myocarditis, menstrual problems, fertility problems, sudden aggressive Cancers, and low sperm counts to name the most common) not to mention the severe mental and developmental problems and suicides brought about by the lock downs. But closing of the schools, where the children were the least likely to succumb to the virus, is a sin that will take years, if ever to recover from, and those who brought this about should suffer the consequences. We as Americans should never let this happen again.
As always, I do not ask for agreement but rather some consideration.
